The article will also give you an in-depth look at GST, GST types, the examination you need to undertake to become a GST practitioner.

GST In Simpler Terms

GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a tax that consumers have to pay when they buy any type of goods or services which include food, electronics, clothes, products required for daily needs; services like transportation or travel.

Before GST was implemented, we had a complicated tax system as there were different types of central and state taxes like excise duty, VAT, services tax, octroi, entry tax, luxury tax, value-added tax, etc. All of these taxes were replaced and a single central tax policy was implemented which allowed for a free movement of goods over states’ borders. Another thing it sought to do was remove the cascading tax effect, meaning tax on tax.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, GST came into effect at midnight of July 1st, 2017. But it’s been almost two decades since the concept was first suggested by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government.

Perks Of GST

  • Preventing tax evasion and corruption because of different measures taken under the GST act.
  • Easy to follow GST procedure from registration to filing returns which can be done online.
  • Composition Scheme which allows businesses between Rs. 20 lakh and Rs. 75 lakh pay a reduced tax on their turnover.
  • Elimination of cascading effect, the tax on tax impact on Goods and services.
  • Fewer complications because of GST as several compliances are lower now.
  • Industries such as textile and construction which were unorganized and unregulated are regulated now.
  • Ease of procedure for E-commerce businesses.
  • Higher exemption limit.
  • The threshold for registration under GST is higher now, RS. 20 lakh, so now the small service providers and traders have the choice to not register.
  • GST has done away with 17 indirect taxes which will result in a surge of product demand that in turn will result in an increase in revenue for both central and state governments.

Types Of GST

Depending on the kind of transaction, we have four types of GST which are CGST ( Central Goods and Services Tax), SGST( State Goods and Services Tax), IGST( Integrated Goods and Services Tax), UGST( Union Territory Goods and Services Tax) which are explained in detail below,

Central Goods and Services Tax:

CGST is levied by the Central Government and is regulated by the Central Goods and Service Tax Act. CGST has done away with all the old taxes such as Central Excise Duty, Customs Duty, Service Tax, SAD, CST, etc.

Transactions are done within a single state that is intrastate. The revenues from CGST, along with SGST are collected by the Central government. For example, if you are a Maharashtra-based trader and selling to a customer in Maharashtra since the transaction is intra-state, both CGST and SGST are applicable.

State Goods and Services Tax

Just like CGST, SGST is applied to the goods and services within a state. The tax is levied by the state government. SGST has replaced all the previous taxes such as VAT, entertainment tax, luxury tax, octroi, tax on lottery, and purchase tax. The revenue gained from SGST is entirely collected by the respective state government.

Integrated Goods and Services Tax

IGST is imposed on interstate (between two states) goods and service transactions as well as on imports and exports. Under the IGST Act, the taxes are collected by the Central government and are then distributed to respective states.

For example, if a trader from Maharashtra has sold goods to a trader from West Bengal, then the IGST is applied. IGST also enables you to claim Input Tax Credit which helps control cascading tax.

The tax came into implementation so that states only have to work with the Union Government instead of each state.

Union Territory Goods and Services Tax

UTGST applies to the Goods and Services supplied in any of the Union Territories in the country: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Daman Diu, Dadra, and Nagar Haveli, and Lakshadweep.

The revenue gained by UTGST is claimed by the Union Territory government. UTGST is a counterpart of State Goods and Service Tax and so it is levied along with CGST in Union Territories.
