What is the CAT Exam?
CAT Exam or Common Admission Test is an online computer-based student selection test conducted by IIM B-Schools in India as a pre-admission requirement for the student selection for the business administration programs. Other than IIMs many famous B Schools in India have the same requirement for the admission process. To name a few colleges like the Institute of Management Technology, S.P Jain Institute of Management and Research, FMS (Faculty of Management Studies).

What is Eligibility To Appear for CAT Exam
You must fall in the following Category to apply for the Online CAT Exam.
Any bachelor’s degree holder with a minimum score of 50% or else Cumulative Grade Point Average equivalent to 50% or above. Students from reserved categories have a rebate of 5% in the total aggregation of marks. 45% is the minimum benchmark set for SC, ST, OBC seat students. 3% seats are reserved for people with any type of disability however for this category also the minimum score required is 45%.
Your degree should be from only UGC approved colleges or universities or deemed to be university according to an education law or it should hold an equivalent recognition from MHRD India.
Students who are still appearing for their final year examinations are also eligible to apply for the online CAT Exam. Once you are selected, there is a provision period for which the student needs to submit a certificate from the college principal/registrar stating that you have completed all the requirements to obtain your degree from the respected institute/college with the certificate issued date.

CAT Exam Syllabus
Though there is no predefined syllabus for the CAT exams however usual CAT exam questions come from higher school topics of Maths & English. Please note that Logical Reasoning Questions are also part of the CAT Examination. Majorly the 3 types of CAT exam questions come from:
CAT Quantitative Aptitude: This includes topics from schools standard 8th to 10th like geometry, algebra, number system, etc.
CAT Logical Reasoning & Data Interpretation: The second most important syllabus to focus on is DILR which includes a variety of logical reasoning sections like parallel logic, strengthening, etc.
Verbal Ability Section & CAT Reading Comprehension: In this section, comprehension passages are given followed by a few questions. Apart from that, veral ability based questions like sentence completion, para jumbles, critical reasoning, etc. are asked.
CAT Exam Registration
One can only register for the CAT examination online, registrations can be done only at CAT official website once it is released. The expected time to start registration every year is August 1st Week and it continues until the last week of September. There is a short time correction window available after the final registration process dates. One should fill the correct details as false information or incorrect information can further lead to the cancellation of your application.
Eligibility Verification
Once you are shortlisted by any IIMs Colleges for Written Ability Test or Personal Interview you will be undergoing through the following verifications which include.
Marksheets and Degree Certificate
An original mark sheet along with self-attested copies needs to be submitted during the time of your personal interview. In a case, if you are selected for a particular program you would need to submit original and self-attested copies along with original mark sheets of all your previous semesters at the time of joining.
Reservation Category Requirements
Those who are applying under reserved category need to show their original documents along with self-attested copies which needs to be submitted on interview day. Students would be asked to submit the original certificate degree and a signed copy for further verification process.
Candidates in the Final Year of Graduation
Students who are yet to complete their final year graduation are required to submit original certificates produced by the college registrar/principal or the director of the University/Institution certifying that you have scored more than 50% or above for general category based on your current marks/grades. For the reserved students, 45% of marks/grades are required.
Admission Process
All IIMs shortlist final candidates on the basis of Written Ability Test and Personal Interviews and it is the sole discretion of IIMs to approve or reject candidates after their final selection process. Your individual performance is the biggest factor for your overall selection process which includes your past academic background, work experiences and other collective inputs to shortlist at prestigious B Schools.

Is there an age limit (minimum and maximum) for CAT exam?
There is no age restriction (maximum or minimum) for the CAT exam. However, you do have to possess a bachelor’s degree with required percentage of marks or a professional degree. Also, you can appear for the exam if you are in the final year of bachelor’s degree with the required percentage up to that point.
In case of errors, How do I edit the CAT application form after registration?
There are certain fields like your name, DOB, email, and mobile number that cannot be changed at any stage of the registration process. If you make an error in these categories, you have to fill the form afresh.
However, for other fields like communication address, gender, Educational information, work experience, and City preference for exam, CAT allows for a correction window during a specific period of time. It will be notified on the CAT Website. During that timeframe follow the following steps.
- Login with user ID and password on the CAT website
- Go to the application form and make the required changes
- Save the form

What is the syllabus for the CAT exam?
Though the exact syllabus is a bit difficult to define, usually it is from a list of topics across Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Ability (QA).
In case of reserved categories what documents should be submitted?
The caste certificate issued by the government of India must be uploaded at the time of filling the application form. The certificate should mention the following information
- Name of the cast or Tribe
- If the candidate belongs to scheduled caste or scheduled tribes
- District and state/Union Territory of candidates ordinary residence
- The government of India schedule under which candidates caste tribe is approved.
What is the fee for CAT exam? How to pay for it?
The Fee for general and NC OBC candidates is Rs 1900.,SC ST PWD categories is RS 950 . You only have to pay the registration fee once.
You can pay the CAT exam fee when registering for the exam online. Complete the payment through the payment gateway using a credit card, debit card or net banking facility
Can I select a shift and test time according to my preference?
You will be given a shift based on your city of preference. You cannot select a shift of your choice. You will be allotted a time slot. You cannot change that.
I have not yet received the marks for my Bachelor's degree. Can I submit my 12th mark sheet?
You will have to submit the aggregate percentage till the last declared results by your University in the CAT application form. CAT registration.
For 12th there is a separate section for filling the marks and it is mandatory
When will I get my Admit Card? If I have not received my Admit Card whom should I contact?
The date for the issue of admit card will be available on the CAT website. The admit card will be available to candidates who have successfully completed the online application process.

What if my University name is not mentioned in the drop down menu of the application form?
If your University name is not mentioned, then select others and type the name of the university in the specified column.
Can I appear for CAT exam if I have backlogs in my Bachelor's Degree?
A candidate can appear for the CAT exam with a backlog in graduation but while completing the application form, you have to select ‘yes’ to the question “are you in the final year of bachelor’s degree”. Since your graduation is not complete yet, you are required to submit a certificate issued by the principal or registrar of the university mentioning the candidate has appeared for re-examination and awaiting results.
What is the CAT exam criteria for Reserved Categories?
The candidates from reserved categories will have to attain a minimum percentage of 45% in aggregate in their bachelor’s program.
I do not have a bachelor's degree but I have a diploma. Can I appear for CAT exam?
A diploma holder cannot appear for the CAT entrance exam. The minimum eligibility is for students who have completed graduation from a recognized University or are in their final year of graduation and have a minimum of 50% aggregate (45%for special categories mentioned above). If you have completed a professional degree like CA or ICWAI then also you are eligible for the exam.
