Details On GST Certification Course and GSTP
Here is a detailed guide to all you need to know about GST certification course and GSTP. with this you will be able to have a concrete idea of what is GST and what to expect from GSTP courses and training programs.
What is GST
Simply put, GST is Goods and Service Tax. Well, the important thing to understand about GST is its purpose.
Change in the Indirect Taxes
First things first, it is one of the historical changes in the indirect taxation system. Okay, so let us dig in a little more. Before GST, we had multiple indirect taxes such as VAT and excise tax. These taxation systems would end up multiplying over one another.
Tax Cascade
In layman’s terms, we would have to pay tax upon tax. You would pay tax for paying tax. This phenomenon is called cascading. Maybe Einstein was right, taxation is something that is complicated to understand.
GST removes Cascading
Well, GST precisely aims at avoiding this cascading effect. The tax is applied to the supply of any goods or services. Hence the name ‘Goods’ and ‘Service.’ removes the entire burden from the consumer who buys the end product and distributes the tax load equally on all the touchpoints of the supply chain.

Getting down to Understanding GST
Okay, let me explain that fancy statement. Any product goes through different stages before reaching out to the customer. Agree with that?
A Tax based on Stages [Multistaged]
First, the raw materials are acquired. Then, these raw materials are processed to manufacture the product. Next, it is marketed to the wholesalers who pack the product in bulk and store it. Finally, the retailer purchases the products and finally sell them to the consumer.
Did you notice the number of stages the product has to go through to reach out to you, the consumer? It is a multi-stage process.
A Tax based on Value Added
Also, at each stage, there is some effort that goes in to make the product more user-friendly to the consumer.
Basically, these efforts add value to the product. At each stage, there is some value added to the product.
Based on Destination
Furthermore, at each stage in the supply chain, notice that the product reaches a different destination. For instance, the raw materials may be procured from say Punjab and processed in say Maharashtra.
The tax is levied even on this. However, a part of the tax goes to the central government and another part goes to Maharashtra.
The most important thing to understand here is that the entire tax is
- Multi-staged
- Based on value-added
- Destination Based
Understanding some more Fancy Terms
Now let’s understand the example above (Punjab-Maharashtra). GST is of three types. You might have seen it on the bills right?
- CGST – The tax that goes to the central government when a sale happens within the state.
- SGST – The tax that goes to the state government when a sale happens within that particular state.
- IGST – This is the tax collected by the central government when a sale happens between two states (As in our example)
GST – Single Domestic Bill
Notice that GST is the tax applicable only within India. This is; therefore, a domestic tax. The historic GST was passed on the 29th day of March 2017.
So this is quite a recent bill; however, with great toil and history behind it. Read the next section to know more about the history of the GST bill in India.
